Velvac Cross View Mirrors Help Drivers Comply with Recent New York Law

Thursday, September 1, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On July 18, 2011, in an effort to improve vehicle safety, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law that requires convex, or “cross view” mirrors, to be placed on the front of trucks driven in large New York cities. This law was written and signed in reaction to several young children who were killed crossing the street directly in front of large trucks.

“According to NHTSA, frontal impacts account for almost three quarters of all pedestrians killed by large trucks,” noted Jeff Porter, President and CEO of Velvac. “This law will go a long way in significantly reducing such fatalities.”

Under the law, which will be effective on January 14, 2012, all trucks registered in the state of New York with a maximum GVW of 26,000 pounds or more must be equipped with a cross view mirror on the front of the vehicle when driving in New York cities with a population of one million or more residents. The mirror must allow the operator to see a target zone one foot in front of the vehicle and three feet above the road.

According to Governor Cuomo, “Convex mirrors are an effective tool to protect pedestrians from accidents caused by blind spots. This law will allow truck operators to see pedestrians or objects directly in front of them and will offer new safety protections to many New Yorkers.”

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver added that, “The installation of crossover mirrors on large trucks will eliminate a dangerous blind spot for truck drivers, and help protect pedestrians, particularly children, from being injured or killed when a truck first begins to move.”

Velvac first developed front dual-view crossover mirrors more than 25 years ago and has expanded its offering on heavy trucks many times since. In 2009, Velvac acquired K-10 Enterprises, a leading manufacturer of front crossover mirrors and the inventor of the K-10 Eyeball™ convex mirror, giving Velvac one of the most complete offerings of quality front crossover mirrors in the industry. When properly installed, these mirrors will help vehicle owners comply with this recent New York State law.
